Strengthening Your Family In Today’s Challenging Economy

What is your life really all about?

Are you making the most of your time?

How important is your family to you?

I ask these questions because in today’s challenging economy, it’s easy to get “caught up” in life’s hectic schedule and miss out on what’s truly most important.

Trust me, I can relate.  Being a husband and father of two girls while managing Success By Choice, Inc., there have been times when I felt there was not enough time to get everything done.  Have you ever said, “I wished I had more time to…?”

As you and I both know, we all have the same 24 hours in a day, no more, no less.  And yet, everyone wants more time.  Having given keynote presentations in 45 states and 13 countries, I am no longer surprised at the number of people who approach me afterwards and say, “I’m inspired but how do I maintain balance between work and family?”  I encourage them to participate in the “Living With Purpose” Challenge (www.purposeandfun.com) because it reinforces leadership principles for living a holistic life.  From this exciting program, here are three key principles for Strengthening Your Family:

1.   Time is Your Most Valuable Commodity

Yes, our global society is experiencing some economic challenges and uncertainty. However, we must remember that money can be earned, lost and earned again.  But unlike money, once a day is over, it’s gone forever, never to be regained.  It is critically important for you to gain clarity on your family vision.

Your Assignment: Get pen and paper, find a quiet location, and answer this question:  “What is my vision for my family?”  For the next 20 minutes, write everything that you desire for your family.  Do not censor your thoughts. Just let your ideas flow.

Remember this:  “Life is precious!  Be courageous and say, “No” to things that do not support your vision!”

2. Your Actions Impact Your Family

Now that you’ve written your vision for your family, it’s time to take action.

Your Assignment: For the next 7 days, review your list and do at least one thing that supports your family vision each day.

Remember this:  “When you’re 95 years old and you reflect upon your life, what will truly matter are the loving relationships and the treasured memories that you have.  Let’s not procrastinate.  Live with purpose today!”

3.   Our Children Really Need You

You will have some amazing experiences when you share your insights on a regular basis with your family, especially young children and teenagers. Today’s young people are being bombarded with different messages and that’s why they need quality time with you.

Your Assignment: Schedule one day per week for “Family Time.” Turn off the television, computer, cell phones, and radio so there are no distractions during your family activity.  Weekly activities include playing board games, cooking a meal, and reading a book together.  Get creative and ask your child what he or she wants to do.  The purpose of these activities is to create opportunities for strengthening your family bond.

Remember this:  “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6

  • I believe that one of the best ways to strengthen a family in any economy is to work together in a family business. My husband and I do this. We have two children and it's great to be accessible to them and to each other on our own schedule. We work together, make money together and increase our leadership skills by making essential decisions about family and business every day. We have the benefit of scheduling work around our family instead of the other way around. It's nice to have the flexibility and I wish it for everyone.

Even if a family cannot start a full-time business together, a part-time venture can increase the family income, strengthen ties and create new business opportunities as time passes. A part-time venture can also lead to a full-time business for the entire family or for some of the children who decide to carry on the family legacy.

These days, it's riskier than ever to rely on a traditional job for 100% of family financial security. I hope more people will consider family business ownership as a viable option.
